The Pattern
I was asked to make a couple of pair of culottes for someone very special (Jordan). I was very happy to be able to help out, and with my brilliant sidekick (Emily) beside me, I just knew we could get it done in just a couple of hours. You see, just last year we made close to 25 pair together. It felt like I could do it in my sleep! So, I look for my pattern, which I just knew I packed away in my bedroom closet, but for some strange reason, it disappeared. Well, I thought I would be able to get it done from memory (which, due to age is also quickly disappearing!). Who needs a pattern, right?! I cut out the material and started sewing away, all the while knowing in my gut that something just doesn't look right. I asked Em to try it on for me, but she couldn't even pull them up over her hips. Cancel that pair (it was a good thing that I had used some old material that was just laying around). I went to Fabricland and found a pattern that I thought I could fudge a little (it is so hard to find modest apparel nowadays, even in a pattern, but that is another blog for another day!). This morning, the pattern was cut out, and with it two very modest-looking pair of culottes were transformed!! Yay!! Emily did a lot of the sewing, and I did the hard parts. The spiritual part that came to mind was this:
Many times we think that we as Christians can do things our way to try to make our lives turn out right, and make the Lord happy with that. However, God has given us a pattern for our lives, and many times we think our way is better. We can find it in His Word, but we don't read His word, much less apply it to our lives. I am thankful that we don't have to go through life without His guidance and direction. What a great God we have!
