Another Prayer Request

Hi, there Friends! Thanks for checking in on us! Alan was able to book 2 more meetings today! Yay!
I do have a prayer request. I may be jumping the gun a little bit, but in my heart, I would feel better if we knew SOMETHING. Sometime last summer, probably around June, I applied for my Canadian Citizenship. For years, we kept telling ourselves that I really needed to get it done, but...we just didn't. Well, the time has come where it HAS to get done. So, I send in the application, and according to the website, it takes from 12-15 months. However, in talking to others who have recently received theirs, it takes less time than that. And that is not a bad problem. As a matter of fact that would be great if it could happen BEFORE all this travelling takes place. The problem is that we need to start getting our visas for Ghana. Alan and Brendin can get theirs in Toronto. No problem. But because I am a U.S. citizen, I would have to mail my passport to Washington D.C., have them insert the visa, and then wait for it to get mailed back to me. The other thing is that, according to these other people who have just gotten their Canadian citizenship, once the applicant receives the study booklet, there will be a test, and then if the test is passed, there will be a ceremony in which the applicant has to be sworn in. All of this is within a few weeks of each other. I have already received the booklet (it came in December), but no other information as to when the test will be and such. I know that these governmental things take time, but it would be great to have some dates to work around. If I pass the test, then I would go to the ceremony. THEN I would have to apply for my Canadian passport, and then get a visa for that passport. And then I wouldn't have to send my U.S. passport over the border, I could just go with the guys and get my visa in Toronto. I think maybe I am worrying for nothing, so that is why I am asking for your prayers. I know the Lord is in control...I just have to allow Him to do the controlling!! If this doesn't make sense to you, I am sorry. It seemed to make a lot more sense in my head;0)
Have a great night!!

CREEPY!!...

This morning, I took my usual trek to the laundry mat. I really enjoy doing laundry, so I don't mind going to the laundry mat. Every week, at least one child will go with me to help me with the baskets and such. Today, that child was Emily.
Well, Emily and I had already put the clothes into the dryers and we sat at the chairs, flipping through the television stations. At this point, we were the only ones in the building until a young man in his early 20's came in. I smiled at him (I usually smile at everyone), but he didn't crack a smile, he just gave me an icy stare that sent shivers down my spine. (Some people don't return the smile, but that icy stare...) All he had was a backpack. He didn't use the washroom, vending machine, laundry equipment, or anything. He just walked up behind us and stood there. TALK ABOUT MAKING ME NERVOUS!! Immediately, I started praying because I couldn't see him, and at this point, my heart was beating quite rapidly. I just felt really uncomfortable. So I stood up, hoping that Emily would follow my lead, but she didn't:( I walked over to the dryers and took out some clothes, knowing that most of those clothes were still quite wet, but at least I could see him. He just kept watching t.v. He stood there for another minute. Then, a lady walked in, and he left. I just KNEW the Lord sent her our way! We usually go when no one else is there that way we are not tripping over people. The other thing that I found was neat, is that in all these weeks that we have been going to this laundry mat, it is RARE for someone to come in after us to start their laundry just as this lady did. Hmmm....
Well, that was the excitement of the day!

Trip to Palo Duro Canyon - November

Here are some pictures that I promised you. These were taken at Palo Duro Canyon, Texas. I am sorry they are so late!!

Tried Something New This Week

Hello, friends and loved ones, thanks so much for stopping by!

As you can see from the title, that I tried something that I NEVER thought would happen...mostly because of my age. I will start over by saying that I have started taking the young 'uns ice skating this last week. 1) It will help burn off some of their energy. 2) It keeps them out of Alan's very short hair:) 3) It will get them out for a little bit. As they were skating last Friday, I just longed to be out there with them. But I just kept telling myself that there was no WAY I should get out there! There was just no time in our life for me to fall and break a hip!! But, still, I longed to be out there. As a child, I roller skated ALL THE TIME! I mean, it felt like summer 9 months out of the year, and there were sidewalks everywhere; I could basically skate anytime after school! But I was told, it was NOT the same. Well, it just so happened that the boys did not go this week, so Austin kindly lent me his skates, and I tried it!! I had a BLAST!! Bethany is still learning, and she is really cute to watch. She is such a sweetheart! She just kept giving me encouraging words. I really liked it when she yelled, "Yay, Mommy!! You're not using the wall!!" It was so nice skating alongside Emily, as we were able to talk for quite a while without any interruptions (except of course for my stumbling). She asked, "Do you think there are any skating arenas in Africa?" Hmmm... So I am off to Value Village at some point before Tuesday to find my own skates. Yay!! It was really good to be able to get some exercise while spending time with the kiddos. So the plan is to go every week until the arenas close for the season. One of the nice parts about it is that there is public skating time for 2 hours during the day twice a week, and 1 hour on another day! So that's like 5 hours of skating time a week!! Yeeeeehawwwww!! Another upside is that since they have these public skates in the middle of the day, it is not crowded! Can you tell that I am a bit excited about this??!!

Well, I think I have spent more than enough time on this computer, so I shall go and spend some time with my wonderful hubby!! By the way, he is doing such a fantastic job at setting up our meetings. He got two more meetings today. I KNOW it is not easy for him. But it is necessary, and I am very proud of him, and thankful for his hard work. I know that ULTIMATELY God is in control, and HE guides Alan to where HE wants us. God is so Good!!

Sunday

Hello, friends! This last Sunday we had the privilege of being at North Country Baptist Church in Orillia, Ontario, where Pastor Len Crow pastors a really friendly church. I really enjoyed being there. They run a bus route, and brought in what seemed like quite a few children. My heart ALWAYS goes out to bus children. For those of you who work in the bus ministry, thank you. I know it is a lot of hard work, lots of praying, and there are even some tears. But you can give to these children something that they do not get at home: The Love of Christ!! Isn't that what they need?? I know that personally, I am VERY grateful for my bus captain and the bus drivers that took the time and money to invest in my life and the lives of my brothers.
Back to North Country Baptist Church: I really appreciated the Sunday School teacher for Bethany's class. She has exposed her class to missions by teaching them about missionaries from years past. Then she brought her class out to see the display table to ask questions. I thought it was great!!
After the service, we went out to lunch, and then the Crows took us to their farm. They are fascinating people!! He is a cowboy and has had many adventures! At one time in their life, his family followed him in their truck while he rode horseback from Alaska to Texas. It took them 6 MONTHS! But he did it to raise money for a children's orphanage. His church has built and orphanage in Cambodia. They have many residents whose lives are being saved from the wickedness of adults there in that country. What they are doing is no small task.
We didn't have a scheduled meeting that Sunday night, so we drove over to Wasaga Beach to see the Adkins family and try to be a blessing to their church. All I can say is "WOW!!" There weren't a whole lot of people there, but the Spirit was definitely there! I was also really impressed with their oldest son who is 16 years old. He leads the singing! He is only 16!! It is hard to get ADULT men in front of people!! Anyway, he does a fantastic job. It is great to see young people serving the Lord, and I am sure it is a great help to his dad.
Well, I am off to try to do some more teaching. Finally, I am beginning to see the light at the of the homeschooling tunnel for this year! Yay!!

Another Supporting Church

Yay!!!! Calvary Baptist Church of Ashland Ohio has taken us on for support! We are so happy! While we were visiting this church, it was quite OBVIOUS that they are SERIOUS about missions! Thanks, Pastor Strachan and Calvary Baptist! We are pleased to be a part of your missions family!

Complicated

I was going over my daily Bible reading today out of Leviticus 3 and 4. I guess I had never realized all the requirements of sacrifice for sin. For example, if someone ignorantly committed a sin regarding a commandment, then a priest had to sacrifice a certain type of animal using a particular gender, and there were specifications. I don't know how the priests memorized everything that had to be done and all the qualifications that were involved. The first thing that popped into my head was, "Wow!!!! We are so blessed to have a Saviour that took care of all of the specifics!" No trying to figure out if the priest had the right kind of animal, etc. The only thing we have to do is to realize that we (I) have sinned, and ask Christ for forgiveness. Repentance is key here. How can we truly ask for forgiveness if we know that tomorrow we are just going to do the same thing again? He has taken care of the rest. Truly, the Lord is good, and we (I) are not worthy. But He died any way. To pay our (my) penalty for sin. No sin is too great to be forgiven.
Our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, was the Ultimate Sacrifice!

Sweetest Conversation Ever

Hello, friends! Thanks for checking in with us. We appreciate your love and your prayers!

Our friends, the Rutherford family, moved to Trail, B.C. They have a daughter who is about 1 1/2 years older than Bethany, and they are REALLY great buddies. They even call each other. As much as we all miss this dear family, Bethany misses her friend like no body's business. I mean, we are going to visit them in July, and every day Bethany wishes July were here. Poor girl. Anyway, her friend called her one day, and I had the privilege of hearing one of the sweetest conversations ever. At first, they were quoting memorized Scripture to each other. Really, when was the last time you heard young children like that, reciting Scripture to one another??!! It was sweet. Then her friend must have asked her what her favourite place was that she has traveled to so far. Bethany said, "Well, it used to be Canada when you lived here, but now that you live in B.C., that's my favourite place." How funny is that??!!
Thought that might give you a good laugh today.:D

Praise!

Hi, there, friends,
I hope everyone is doing well. Our family is doing well, except that Emily woke up this morning and she was crying. That is just NOT like her at all. So when I asked her what was wrong, she said that she had a really bad headache and her stomach felt funny. So I got her situated in our bed with a plastic bag handy. Job well done, right? Well, no! She did get sick, but not in the bag. On the carpet. Right where I have to stand when I climb into bed! Oh, the joys of motherhood. Not only did I get to clean it up, but I get to step in it, too. Yay!! Can you hear the sarcasm??!! Thankfully, she is feeling some better. We did not send her to get her piano lesson today, though. I did, however send her outside for a few minutes to see if the brisk cold and snowballs would help her. Anyhoo...
On to the praise:
About 2 weeks ago, we had to take Bethany back to the eye dr. because apparently her prescription had changed and we noticed that she was having trouble seeing again. So we take her in, and at that time, Alan asks this dr. if he could get her in to see a different specialist so that we could get a second opinion about her eyes. He said that it would probably take about 9 months to get her seen here in Hamilton, but if we wanted it sooner, we could probably get into one in London, over an hour's drive from here. A long way, but still doable. Anyway, we waited for the call back from his receptionist to give us the details of the appointment. She called last Friday, and said the appointment would be for the following Tuesday in Hamilton. WOW! Even she was shocked! But we knew WHO was in control and we were really thankful. So we go see this Ophthalmologist who specializes with children. At first I didn't tell him why we were there, I just let him do his thing. When he said that she seems to have pretty good vision with her glasses, it seemed as though he were dismissing us. So that is when I brought up the fact that Bethany had gone to a different specialist all her life, and up until that point, we trusted him. It was only when we had to take her to the optometrist (it was very obvious that she was having trouble seeing), that we were informed of her astigmatism. That bothered us because the first ophthalmologist had just seen her 6 months before, and never mentioned it. However, the optometrist called the astigmatism severe, and said that it would have been obvious even 6 months prior. Hence, the 2nd opinion. So now this specialist is saying the same thing as the first one, only this one explained it FAR better! Here is what he said:
1. She has droopy eyelids. (I didn't know what it was called until he told me) Right now, they are not a problem simply because she compensates by tilting her head back a bit to see better. She has done this all of her life. Because she has done this, her eyelids have not impaired her vision. That's fantastic!! If we were to push for surgery to correct some of the droopiness, it would only be cosmetic, and in the long run, would still be a little droopy. The reason for that is that if they were to correct the droopiness too much, then her eyes would not close tight while she were sleeping, and thus dry out her cornea. There would be serious ramifications. NO SURGERY!!
2. Up until now, we were told that her tear ducts were closed. However, this fella said that they are in fact open. But when she cries, there are no tears. So he said that he has only seen about 4 patients like her in the last 10 years, and his only explanation is that her tear glands just don't develop the amount of tears that the rest of us produce. (I think sometimes my other children make up for her:)) However, he said that it is quite obvious that she is producing SOME tears because her cornea is so pristine. He said that otherwise, she would have more serious problems after dealing with this for 6 years.
So, all this to say that he basically agreed with the 1st specialist, so I have peace of mind. He also mentioned that going to Africa would not interfere with anything going on with her eyes as long as we took her to an optometrist every year. Praise the Lord! Isn't it amazing how the Lord takes care of every single detail when He has a specific job for His child! It doesn't the how minor or how serious, HE takes care of it! He is so good!
Thanks for checking in on us and praying for us! This Sunday, we are at Brampton International Baptist Church in the a.m., and Mississauga International Baptist Church in the p.m. Looking forward to visiting with both ministries and seeing familiar faces and meeting new people!
Have a wonderful day!

Thanks for praying

I forgot to blog about this, but I will do so now. Thanks so much for praying for our safety. We weren't travelling to a service, but yesterday Alan and the kids were headed back to the church building driving on the Red Hill Expressway. Out of nowhere, a wolf ran right in front of the van and Alan could not slam on his brakes, or swerve. So he had to hit it. Fortunately, no one was hurt. The wolf, however, died. Alan hit it with such force, that he just knew there would be damage to the van. However, when he arrived at the church and checked out the van, there was no evidence what so ever that it had just hit anything. We praise the Lord for His goodness in keeping our family safe!

Beacon Baptist Church

Hello, friends,
We made it to Beacon Baptist Church in Cambridge, Ontario this morning. We had such a great time here. I was asked to teach jr. church, so I could not be near the display table today. We have always enjoyed spending time with Pastor and Mrs. Wyatt and their two children. I had not realized that their two children are the same age as two of ours. It was great to see the kids all get along. Brendin made a new best friend, too. The Wyatts have this ADORABLE dog. Brendin loves most dogs, and this one especially. They played really well together:o). I was nervous about teaching, as I had not taught in any children's ministry since November. But I had a wonderful time. It was really good to see that this church has a good bus ministry. NEVER give up on your bus kids! I am so glad my bus captain didn't give up on me or my brothers. No matter where we moved to within the city, she was always there, ready to pick us up! I thank the Lord for her and the bus drivers. What a blessing they were in my life!
After the morning service, we Alan, Brendin, Mrs. Wyatt, and myself all headed back to the Wyatt house and enjoyed a DELICIOUS lunch and a good time of fellowship. It was a great morning. After that, since we did not have a scheduled evening service, we came back to Faith Baptist and joined them for their service. What a great crowd they had. The preaching was good, too! Right now, it is 10:30, and Alan, Brendin, and Austin all headed over to the Eagles's house, along with other men in the church to enjoy a bowl of chili and the Superbowl. The girls and I stayed home and enjoyed left-over chicken enchiladas and Facing the Giants. We had a great time!
Well, the boys just arrived, so I will sign off. Have a wonderful week!

It is good to have Brendin back from snow camp. I know that he had a wonderful time! He said that the preaching was really good, he's tired, and sore. AAAAHHHH!! The makings of a perfect weekend!

Please pray for me ...I can't be trusted.

That's right. My family has informed me that I cannot be trusted to stand at our display table ALONE!:o) Ok. So at every meeting, it is prearranged if we are to have our display table set up. So far, it has been. We all have our own jobs to do, and then one of us (or any number of our family members) is to stand by the table and greet people. No problem. We all enjoy doing it. However, because Brendin and Alan set up the electronic equipment, and the other three kind of explore, make friends, and look for other missionary prayer cards, I am ususally the one to greet people at the table alone. Well, on our first week out, a little boy asked me questions about a snake-skin wallet on the table, and then he asked if he could have it. So I said, SURE!! I was talked to for that one. Then, this last Sunday, a lady walked by and asked if the elephant was for sale. It was such a nice elephant, too. It stood at about 6 inches high, and was a beautiful black colour with two white, removable tusks. It was Alan's favourite. But I didn't KNOW that until...later.:o( I smiled and kindly told her that I was sorry. The elephant was not for sale. A little while later, two men approached said table, and one asked me how much I would take for the elephant. I smiled and kindly told him that the elephant was not for sale. What a persistant man he was!!! He said, "Come on, when you go to Africa, you can have as many as you want!" And he was right. So I told him that I would not sell it to him, but if he really wanted it that badly, I would GIVE it to him. He refused that, put money ($50) in my hand. So, I tried to give him the money, but he would hear nothing of it. So, I justified in my mind that: 1) We are going to Africa in May--get lots of wallets and a few elephants and 2)That $50 can buy A LOT of wallets and elephants!

When Alan came to the table after visiting with some folks, he immediately noticed that, yes...the elephant was LONG GONE. So I explained to him the conversation between the gentlman and myself. That was when he told me that it was his favourite, and that while he was in Africa 3 years ago, he waited while the gentleman finished carving that sweet elephant, he watched as the artist painted it black with shoe polish, and he flew it back with him to present it to me...
The children all gave me a lecture, telling me that if I continue to give things away, we will have NOTHING left for the table. Then Austin went on to remind me that the rhino is HIS, and therefore cannot be give away by me, as did Brendin about the hippo! Yes, we can get more things in May, but that is still 2 1/2 months away! What is a woman to do??!!:o)
So we will see if I will be trusted to be left alone from now on, or if I have to be...watched!

On a more serious note, thanks for praying for little Esther Elliott. If you want to keep track of her yourselves, here is a website/blog that her dad is keeping up to date. Just some advice - have some tissue handy. www.danielelliottfamily.us

Our Schedule

Yay, my guys are back!! It's good to have them home again. I can't believe how much I missed them. Now, Brendin will be leaving for snow camp. He will be leaving tonight and returning Saturday. I am really glad he is going. He needs the fellowship with other Christians his age. Physically, he seems to be growing up soooooooooo fast!!

I forgot to tell everyone that we now have 3 churches supporting us. Isn't that exciting??!! As of now, we do not know how much a month we will need in support. We will find all of that out in June. That is when Alan and I travel down to Florida for our missions training. There, they will teach us how to factor in everything we will need on the field, so that we can come up with an amount for support. Does that make sense? Anyway, below is a list of sorts that will tell you where we will be in the next few months:

Missing Alan and Austin

Hi! Alan and Austin went down to Brunswick, Ohio. They left yesterday afternoon, and will arrive later tonight. I cannot believe how much I have missed them!! Things were a little quiet around here today without them. Yesterday (Monday), Emily and Brendin went ice skating at a friend's house. They had a wonderful time and skated for a little over an hour. That just didn't seem long enough for them=). Because it was pretty windy, Bethany and I went on a date. We had a terrific time, just the two of us. After we picked up the other two, we joined a lady from Faith Baptist for supper. She normally stays home, but that night she felt like going out. She called another lady from FBC to join us, and I am glad she did! We ended up going to a chinese restaurant. The food was excellent, and the fellowship even greater! We thank the Lord for our friends and family! Still, I cannot WAIT for Alan and Austin's return!!

Have a great night!

Hello, friends,
Thanks for checking in on us. Things are going well. We had the privilege of being at Garlow Line Baptist Church on Sunday morning. We really enjoyed being in their service. We saw many familiar faces, and many more new faces. We could really tell that the church has grown since our last visit. After the service, we joined the Baucom family for a very delicious lunch. The fellowship was great, and we had many laughs together.
On Sunday night, we were able to present our burden for the Togolese people at New Testament Baptist Church here in Hamilton. We know so many people there personally, that it almost feels like home. However, there were also some new faces, so there is some definite growth there! Praise the Lord! The service went well, and then afterwards, a fellowship was held. Mrs. Tyrrell and her girls were VERY creative! They made a tray of cookies and a tray of bell peppers. Both trays were organized into the Togo flag. They turned out really great! That was really sweet of them! Thanks, Tyrrell family! There was some really sweet fellowship; we enjoyed ourselves.
